The New Millwood Budgens Is Almost Here
After weeks of work behind the scenes, a new chapter for Millwood is almost here.
Our newly transformed Budgens store at Millwood Services in Cam is due to open this Friday, 28 August, marking one of the biggest changes to the site in recent years.
Customers passing Millwood over the last few weeks will already have seen plenty happening. The former SPAR store has been undergoing a major refurbishment as we prepare to welcome customers into a completely refreshed convenience store.
There will be a new look, a new retail partner and plenty to discover inside.
But there is one thing we particularly want our customers to know:
Millwood is still Millwood.
We remain the same independent, family-owned local business, and the move to Budgens is about investing in what comes next.
Nearly 60 Years of Millwood in Cam
Change is nothing new at Millwood.
Our story began on 25 April 1966, when the original business opened on what was then a greenfield site in Cam. Over the decades, Millwood has grown and changed considerably alongside the community it serves.
One of the biggest transformations came in 2008, when the site closed for a major £1.25 million redevelopment. The completely rebuilt Millwood opened in February 2009 with a new 2,000 sq ft convenience store and a significantly redesigned Shell petrol forecourt.
Now, almost 60 years after Millwood first opened, we’re preparing for another important milestone. The move from SPAR to Budgens gives us the opportunity to take the shop forward again and create a new convenience store for the years ahead.
A New Budgens Store, but the Same Independent Millwood
Although Budgens will become the new name above the shop, Millwood remains independently owned and operated. That’s an important distinction.
For generations of customers around Cam, Dursley and the surrounding Gloucestershire communities, Millwood has been known as much more than simply a branded convenience store.
For some, we’re still “the Shell forecourt in Cam”. For others, we’re where they stop for a coffee on the way to work, pick up something for dinner, grab a few groceries or call in for something they’ve forgotten.
Our Shell forecourt continues to be an important part of Millwood, alongside the convenience store and other facilities our customers use every day. The Budgens transformation is about building on that.
Local Products Will Remain Part of the Story
While a great deal is changing inside the shop, we don’t want Millwood to lose the local character that has developed over many years. Supporting local and regional producers has long been part of our approach, and that will continue with the new store.
Customers will already recognise some of the names we have worked with, including:
- Frocester Fayre, the family-run farm shop and butchers based just a few miles away in Frocester
- Winstones Ice Cream, the Gloucestershire family business that has been making its Cotswold ice cream since 1925.
- Hawkstone, the beer and cider brand associated with Jeremy Clarkson and Diddly Squat Farm. Hawkstone produces a range of British-made drinks, including lager and cider, with its cider made using apples sourced from Gloucestershire, Herefordshire and Worcestershire.
- Locally produced Cotswold honey from Cotswold Edge Bees.
These local connections are something we want to celebrate much more. Over the coming weeks, we’ll be introducing some of the suppliers behind the products at Millwood, finding out more about their businesses and sharing the stories behind what they produce.

More Than Just an Opening Day
The planned opening is an important moment, but we don’t see it as the end of the project. It’s really the beginning. Once the new Budgens store is open and settled, there will be much more to share about what’s happening at Millwood.
We’ll be taking a closer look at the finished shop, introducing more of our local suppliers, sharing stories from the people who work here and highlighting new products, offers and food-to-go options as they develop.
We’re also looking forward to exploring supplier-led activities, tastings and other events that give people another reason to visit Millwood and discover something different.
Keep an eye on our socials and website for updates on the opening and what’s still to come at Millwood Budgens in Cam.
Where Is Millwood Budgens?
Millwood combines the new Budgens convenience store with our established Shell petrol forecourt and other everyday facilities, making it convenient for customers from Cam, Dursley and the surrounding area.
Millwood Services are open 7 days a week from 7am – 10pm and located at Draycott, Cam, Dursley GL11 5DH, UK.
See You Soon
A lot of work has gone into getting Millwood to this point, and we’re looking forward to finally being able to show everyone the result.
For customers who have been coming to Millwood for years, we hope the new store feels like an exciting step forward while retaining the independent, local character you know us for. And if you live locally but haven’t visited Millwood for a while, this might be a good time to take another look.
A new Budgens is coming. A new-look Millwood is almost ready. And the next chapter begins this Friday.
We look forward to welcoming you.
